Uses of media sand in a swimming pool
- Traps dirt, dust, leaves, and small particles
- Helps keep water clear
- Filters impurities as water passes through the sand bed
How it works
Pool water is pumped through a tank filled with special filter sand (called media sand). The sand catches unwanted particles, and clean water returns to the pool.
Common types
- Silica sand (most common)
- Glass media
- Zeolite media
Important points
- Sand usually needs replacement every 35 years
- Filters require regular backwashing to remove trapped dirt
- Typical sand size used is 0.450.55 mm
Media sand does not disinfect water; chlorine is still needed to kill germs.
